Coffee trees were introduced to this Central American country in 1750 by Jesuit priests and German settlers who developed the industry in the late 19th century. Most of the country's coffee production is to the south on the volcanic slopes of the Sierra Modre. Fairly frequent volcanic activity combined with frequent light rainfall and sun combine to provide an ideal growing climate.
